German Chancellor Olaf Scholz proposed to simplify the process of entry of new countries into the European Union (EU). He told the agency DPA.
To do this, Brussels needs to “modernize its structures and decision-making processes,” the German chancellor said. He intends to raise this issue at the EU summit on June 23-24.
Now, states applying for EU membership can obtain the status only with the unanimous decision of all member states. However, Scholz questions this principle.
The German Chancellor urged Brussels to resolve Ukraine’s status in a “spirit of unity.” He noted that the process will be difficult, since each candidate country that wants to become part of the European Union must fulfill many requirements.
Earlier, the European Commission (EC) published a decision on Ukraine’s application for EU membership. In order to maintain the status of a member of the EU, Ukraine must carry out a number of reforms. Among them is the continuation of the judicial reform and the implementation of the reform of the Constitutional Court. In addition, the country must pass laws that prevent corruption, oligarchy, money laundering. Ukraine must also change the legislation on national minorities.
