EU flags outside the organization's headquarters in Brussels. The possible entry of ten new members into the European Union will require its deep reform, European Commissioner for Justice Didier Reynders said. Earlier on Friday, the European Commission recommended granting Ukraine and Moldova the status of candidates for the European Union.
At the same time, the EC urged to recognize the European aspirations of Georgia, but not to grant the candidate status yet. The decision will be made by the EU leaders on June 23-24.
Serbia will not join the EU without recognizing Kosovo, Scholz said. Currently Albania, North Macedonia, Montenegro, Serbia and Turkey are already official candidates for EU accession. Bosnia and Herzegovina, as well as Kosovo, are potential candidates.
“This demonstrates the need to reform the EU. If there are so many of us, we will not be able to work in the same mode as now,” Reynders said in an interview with the Belgian television channel LN24. He explained that the European Union will need, in particular, to change the rules for making key decisions, which today require the unanimity of all 27 member states.
In addition, it will be necessary to revise the rules for appointing European Commissioners, possibly limiting their number. The European Commissioner also noted that in matters of the rule of law and the fight against corruption, countries aspiring to the EU “have a lot to do.”
