Heavy monsoon rains caused rivers to overflow and roads to become inundated in India's northeastern Assam state on Friday (June 17), Reuters reports.
Local media reports said 16 people have lost their lives in Assam and neighbouring Meghalaya state and thousands of people have been displaced in rains that have continued non-stop for 96 hours.
Monsoon deluges are a yearly occurrence in Assam, resulting in flooding and landslide.
In May, the Brahmaputra River, one of the largest rivers in the world which flows from Tibet to India and finally into Bangladesh, burst its banks in Assam, inundating more than 1,800 villages in 26 districts, devastating parts of the railway network.
