If Georgia receives the EU candidate status with the same unjust obligations as the unjust accusations were reflected in the recent European Parliament resolution, then the country should give a fair refusal in return, the ruling Georgian Dream (GD) party MP Dimitri Khundadze said on Friday.
The EP resolution on Thursday on Georgia’s media freedom and security of journalists expressed various concerns over the country’s media environment, calling for the transfer of the country’s third President Mikheil Saakashvili for treatment abroad and imposing sanctions on the founder of the ruling party Bidzina Ivanishvili.
“Yesterday was not a demonstration of recognition of democracy and the independence of our country. We had the feeling that Georgia's independence was again at risk. What difference does it make for us, who will be the ruler, if we have to fight for independence again ?!" Khundadze asked.
He suggested that “interfering in the internal affairs of the country and denying the choice of the majority of the population is an attempt to encroach on the independence of the country.”
“Neither Bidzina Ivanishvili nor the Georgian state can be intimidated by threats of sanctions. It has become clearer that EU membership is not just a prospect for Georgia's future, it is also a prospect for Europe itself,” Khundadze said.
Georgia applied for EU membership in March and is expecting a decision on its candidate status in the coming weeks.
