More than 550 confirmed cases of monkeypox have now been reported to the World Health Organization (WHO) from 30 countries where the monkeypox virus is not endemic, WHO Director-General Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said on Wednesday.
Tedros said the sudden appearance of monkeypox in many countries at the same time suggests there may have been undetected transmission for some time.
Tedros said monkeypox symptoms usually resolve on their own, but the virus can be severe in some cases.
WHO is urging affected countries to strengthen surveillance, as more cases are likely to be found in the future.
