The European Union (EU) has agreed on a sixth package of sanctions against Russia, including an oil embargo. EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrell stated.
“So now we already have a plan to ban 90% of their [Russia`s] oil imports from the European Union. By the end of this year, we will be buying 90% less, only as an exception for the landlocked countries,” the diplomat said.
He expressed the opinion that this is a reasonable solution to the heated discussions in the European Union. Borrell added that the sixth package of sanctions also includes restrictions on the use of the SWIFT system.
“It will still put more difficulties to the Russian economy and exchanges with the outer world,” Borrell said.
At the same time, he stressed that the EU cannot prevent Russia from selling its oil to other countries. According to Borrell, the EU, however, is Russia's most important client. “They will have to look for another one and certainly they will have to decrease the price,” Borrell said.
