Lithuanian Deputy Defence Minister Vilius Semeška is leaving for Turkey on Tuesday to negotiate the purchase of a Bayraktar combat drone for Ukraine.
Lithuanians have donated 5 million euros for the purchase of the drone in just three and a half days in a fundraising campaign launched by Laisvės TV, an Internet broadcaster headed by Andrius Tapinas.
“It is a historic event when citizens, in cooperation with the authorities, have raised such an unreal amount of money in three days. It is an example for the whole world. The European Parliament, Brussels, Berlin, Paris, or London could initiate such actions,” Semeška said about the fundraising campaign
The deputy defence minister is planning to meet with the drone manufacturers on Thursday. According to Semeška, Lithuania will buy not only the drone but also ammunition.
“Good signals are coming from Turkey. They are ready to contribute to this incredible campaign,” he said.
