The head of the ruling party of Georgia, Kobakhidze, warned about the preparation of a coup d’état by the opposition.
The head of the ruling Georgian Dream party, Irakli Kobakhidze, has warned that the Georgian opposition is preparing to stage a coup d’état at the end of June if the country does not gain candidate status for European Union (EU) membership. He announced this at a briefing, reports RIA Novosti.
The overthrow of power, he believes, is preparing to commit the “United National Movement”. “According to their calculations, at the end of June, Georgia, unlike Moldova and Ukraine, should not receive the status of a candidate for EU membership, which, according to their plans, will lead to popular unrest and a coup by the National Movement and their satellites,” Kobakhidze said.
At the same time, he is sure that the EU has no reason to refuse to grant the status of a candidate member of the association to Georgia, since the country is ahead of Ukraine and Moldova in many indicators. The head of the ruling party stressed that Tbilisi has already fulfilled 45 percent of its obligations under the association agreement, which is an “unprecedented result.”
