War will be long, aggressiveness of actions of Russian Federation will only grow, it is necessary to continue economic pressure on Russian Federation, EU High Representative Josep Borrell stated.
“Sanction pressure on Russia should be increased, as Russia's war against Ukraine could drag on,” he said.
"We must survive. The war will be long, and the aggressiveness of Russia's actions will only increase. We must continue to provide Ukraine with the means to fight, as well as exert economic pressure on Russia," Borrell said.
He stressed that "the Russian economy is already beginning to stop" and further sanctions pressure on Russia will allow Ukraine to take a more favorable position in future peace talks.
Borrell assured that an agreement on the sixth package of sanctions against Russia will be reached. He noted that Hungary, Slovakia and the Czech Republic, which account for seven to eight percent of the EU's imports of Russian oil and oil products, will be given time to get rid of their dependence on Russian energy resources.
Manfred Weber, the leader of the European People's Party (EPP), the leading faction in the European Parliament, called on the EU not to lift the embargo on oil imports from Russia due to Budapest's hesitant stance. He spoke against the compromises in favor of Hungary.
