The Government approved the measure aimed at reducing the additional costs incurred in case of transportation of goods for export or import to the territory of the Republic of Armenia by ferry (ferries).
“During import and export, Armenia has been facing the problem for years that the Upper Lars checkpoint or that road is closed, there are crowds of cars from different sides.
In this new situation, when food security is becoming one of the most important issues for each country, it needs a fundamental solution.
That is why we propose to subsidize the regular Poti - Port-Kavkaz ferry service twice a week so that we can transport a significant part of our logistical cargo transportation to the form of railway transportation, which will significantly increase Armenia's food security and logistical accessibility. Besides, it will significantly increase the competitiveness of Armenia's industry,” said Minister of Economy of Armenia Vahan Kerobyan.
Prime Minister of Armenia Nikol Pashinyan added that this is not the first attempt in the history of Armenia to establish a ferry connection.
“The former has not always been successful. I hope it will work out in the end. There is also the possibility of transporting a car by ferry, but in this case we focus on railway transportation, which, I think, has the further advantage that there are many exported goods that are loaded and unloaded several times on their way to export. In this case, such goods can immediately start very long railway routes from Armenia. The government will subsidize for 6 months, hoping that the system will start working again,” said Nikol Pashinyan.
It was noted that there is no classification of cargo. Regardless of the type of cargo, it is subsidized.
