If Russia decides to leave gas supplies to Europe, the EU may face difficulties next winter, French President Emmanuel Macron said.
“There is an increase in prices (for energy resources) in the short term, which is associated with this war, as well as some speculative behavior in the markets… But if Russia decides to introduce counter-sanctions on energy resources, it will be even more difficult next year,” Macron said at a pre-election meeting with the French in the commune of Poissy in the Paris region.
Macron noted that France does not depend much on Russian gas. “But if Russia decides to cut off gas for Europe… countries like Italy, Germany are very dependent on Russian gas… We will be able to find a solution in the coming weeks. But the big challenge is next winter. Therefore, Europe is working on a solution to counter this,” he stressed.
"Russia and the Russian people must always be treated with respect. It is necessary to continue the dialogue with the Russian leadership, recording the disagreements, because one day we will have to return to the negotiating table," said the French leader.
According to him, it is impossible to build a lasting peace without Russia's participation. This is evidenced by history and geography.
