A total of 1.5 million Ukrainians have fled the war to other European countries within 10 days, the figures provided by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees.
“10 days. 1.5 million people. This is now the fastest-growing refugee crisis since World War II. In the coming days millions, more lives will be uprooted, unless there is an immediate end to this senseless conflict,” the agency pointed out in this regard, SchengenVisaInfo.com reports.
According to the agency, a significant number of Ukrainians have fled to neighboring countries such as Hungary, Poland, Romania, and Slovakia, as well as other European territories.
Up to this point, authorities in Hungary have hosted over 140,000 people from Ukraine, according to the figures provided by local media.
At the same time, a total of 800,000 refugees reached Ukraine’s neighboring country, Poland.
On March 5, authorities in Romania announced that they received over 50,000 refugees from Ukraine within two last days alone.
As for Slovakia, authorities in this country announced that in the first week, nearly 70,000 refugees reached Slovakia.
“The main flow of refugees hasn’t started yet. And it will be much, much bigger. But we are ready; we can accommodate tens of thousands of refugees from Ukraine in our country,” an official from Slovakia’s presidential office pointed out in this regard, as reported by DW.
Besides Ukraine’s neighboring countries, other European countries are also preparing to welcome a large number of refugees from Ukraine.
Recently, authorities in Germany have announced that they would accept refugees from Ukraine, regardless of their nationality. Such a decision was confirmed by German Interior Minister Nancy Faeser.
The Minister emphasized that under the current circumstances, nationality would not play a role in the country’s decision to welcome refugees from Ukraine.
“We want to save lives. That doesn’t depend on the passport,” Faeser stressed, as reported by Deutsche Welle.
