Russian President Vladimir Putin received in the Kremlin Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev, who is on an official visit to Russia.
Before the private talk, the Russian President referred to the unblocking of regional transport communications, emphasizing that not only Azerbaijan and Armenia are interested in this issue, but also Russia and other neighboring countries in the region.
The leaders of Russia and Azerbaijan also referred to the declaration on allied cooperation to be signed between the two countries. Putin expressed the opinion that the declaration marks a new stage in the development of bilateral relations, emphasizing that the still unresolved Karabakh conflict has played a role in this issue.
The Azerbaijani leader expressed confidence that the document will have a positive impact on the development of relations between the two countries, as well as play a significant role in regional security.
At the end of the open part of the meeting, the Russian President also briefed his Azerbaijani counterpart on the developments in the Ukrainian direction.
“After the collapse of the Soviet Union, Russia accepted all the new geopolitical realities. It is actively working to strengthen our cooperation with all countries, independent states that have emerged in the post-Soviet space. Even in very acute situations, such as the settlement of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, we have always acted very cautiously in the interests of all the states involved in the process. We have always tried to reach mutually acceptable solutions,” Putin said.
