As a result of a virtual meeting between Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan and Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev mediated with Emmanuel Macron, President of France (OSCE Minsk Group Co-Chairing country) and President of the European Council Charles Michel on February 4, eight Armenian prisoners of war (POWs) returned to their homeland today.
Hours before returning to Armenia, POWs were met by Red Cross representatives.
In an interview with Lurer, Zara Amatuni, head of communications programs for the ICRC delegation in Armenia, said that they were aware of the process today, but that the International Committee of the Red Cross was not involved in the return talks.
"However, it should be noted that the representatives of our organization met these people before their return, just as they visited all the others during the whole period, who are still being held on the other side. Both our regular visits and this recent visit were aimed at assessing the condition of individuals, as well as their health. During this whole period these people have been given the opportunity to stay in touch with their relatives," said Zara Amatuni.
