On January 31, the UN Security Council voted in favor of a US-initiated meeting on the situation in Ukraine. This is stated on the official website of the organization.
Ten countries voted in favor of the session, Russia and China voted against, three countries abstained. At least 9 votes in favor were needed to hold the meeting.
According to US representative Linda Thomas-Greenfield, her delegation convened the meeting because Russia is increasing its military presence on the border with its neighbors. The US representative noted that the previous meetings on Russia were held behind closed doors, and now it is necessary to convene an open session, which "will put Russia in an awkward position."
Russia's permanent representative to the United Nations Vasily Nebenzia has said that the deployment of troops in Russia is a domestic affair of his country, not a threat to international peace and security. The Russian delegation has repeatedly denied the US accusations.
The Russian side, in turn, intends to discuss the implementation of the Minsk agreements in the Security Council on February 17.
