European Commissioner for Energy Kadri Simson will visit Azerbaijan on 4 February and the US on 7 February to discuss additional gas supplies to the EU, European Commission spokesperson Tim McPhee said at a briefing in Brussels on Tuesday.
As he said, negotiations on gas supplies will continue. Commissioner Simson will travel to Azerbaijan on 4 February to participate in a ministerial meeting of the countries participating in the Southern Gas Corridor. On 7 February, she and EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrell will travel to the United States to participate in the EU-US Energy Council meeting.
Earlier, the Financial Times, citing its sources, reported that Kadri Simpson intends to visit Baku to meet with the Ministers of Energy and Natural Resources of Azerbaijan. According to the FT, discussions on a possible increase in Azerbaijani gas supplies to Europe have intensified due to the crisis over Ukraine, and due to tensions in EU-Russia relations.
