The state of emergency on the border of Latvia and Belarus is planned to be extended until May 10, according to amendments to the emergency situation prepared by the Latvian Ministry of Internal Affairs.
The annotation to the amendments says that from August 10 last year to January 20 this year, illegal crossing of the state border by 4,962 persons was stopped. Since December 13, the number of people trying to cross the border illegally has increased – during this period, attempts by 2,043 people were stopped.
“The Ministry of Internal Affairs considers it necessary to extend the state of emergency on the border with Belarus until May 10,” the annotation says.
It is predicted that the additional costs that will arise in the event of an extension of the emergency will amount to 3.888 million euros.
The decision to extend the state of emergency at the border should be taken by the government.
The state of emergency on the border with Belarus was introduced on August 11, and in November the government extended it until February 10.
