In those days of 1990, there were self-defense battles in Yeraskh, Ararat province, Armenia.
On January 17, Azerbaijani armed groups, using a favorable position, shelled the border villages of the Ararat provice from the Sadarak hill in Nakhichevan.
The commanders of the Armenian self-defense forces convened a meeting of the military council on the night of January 17 to determine the effective directions of the attack.
Late in the evening of January 18, starting decisive attack, the Armenian forces pushed the enemy out, liberating all the strategic heights.
On January 19, the enemy was pushed back to Nakhichevan, all the firing points were destroyed. The national hero of Armenia Movses Gorgisyan and the freedom fighter Yervand Saghumyan were killed in the battles of Yeraskh.
Vardan Papikyan, who was only 15 at the time, is still missing.
