During the press conference summarizing the results of 2021 Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov referred to the recent provocations of Azerbaijan on the Armenian-Azerbaijani border. The journalist asked Lavrov if this was related to the participation of Armenian troops in the CSTO mission in Kazakhstan.
“We are in favor of the swift launch of demarcation of the border between Armenia and Azerbaijan. The border incidents are not connected with the Nagorno-Karabakh zone and the settlement. It is a matter of border settlement between the two countries. For almost a year, we have been proposing steps in that direction by setting up a delimitation and demarcation commission. We have always expressed our readiness to support the issue. There are maps in our headquarters that clearly show the border changes during the formation of the USSR, and where the administrative borders of the two former Soviet states crossed,” Lavrov said. According to him, a commission should be set up to deal with these issues.
“I talked to my Armenian colleague yesterday. New proposals for the establishment of the commission were presented there, which we will pass on to our partners in Baku. There is some contradiction of positions. Our position is clear - to sit within the already established commission to resolve all the issues that have not been agreed yet. We are convinced that the topic is being discussed, and there is a need to set up a commission to discuss the issue as a matter of priority,” he said.
