Russia was made clear that it "has no say" on the issue of Ukraine 's NATO membership, and that refusing to expand the alliance to the east would be a strategic defeat, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmitry Kuleba said commenting on talks between Russia and the United States.
On January 9-10, Russia and the United States held consultations in Geneva on Moscow 's proposals on security guarantees, after which a meeting of the Russia-NATO Council will take place in Brussels, and consultations at the platform of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe will take place in Vienna.
"Russia does not have the right to vote on Ukraine's NATO membership. This is a ‘red line’ that neither Ukraine nor our partners will cross. The collective West will not agree to provide Russia with ‘legal guarantees’ about not expanding the alliance to the east because it would become its strategic defeat,” Kuleba said in a comment to RBC-Ukraine on Tuesday.
He also added that a signal was sent to Russia in Geneva that there would be no agreement on Ukraine without Kyiv's participation.
