The European Union has done much to escalate tensions in Europe. The statement came from Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova at a weekly briefing in response to Western accusations that Russia was creating tensions in Europe.
"In 2009 the EU set up the Eastern Partnership, which aims to counter Russian integration initiatives and to create a sphere of influence in the post-Soviet space," Zakharova said.
According to her, such an action is the signing of an Association agreement with Ukraine.
