The contradictions between the positions of German Chancellor Olaf Scholz and Foreign Minister Annalena Berbock regarding the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline point to a crisis within the German government. Bundestag deputy from the Alternative for Germany party Stefan Kotrets said this in a commentary to Lente.ru.
The politician emphasized that Nord Stream 2 was blown up from a private commercial process into a geopolitical problem solely for ideological reasons. In his opinion, the German government is cut off from reality and thus endangers not only the decades-old energy partnership between Germany and Russia, but also the stability of energy supplies to Europe.
“One can only hope that Chancellor Scholz, who seems to be partially realistic on this issue, can prevail over the stubborn, even childish ideologues of the Green Party,” said Cotrets.
Earlier, German Foreign Minister Annalena Berbock (representative of the Greens in the Cabinet) said that Nord Stream 2 plays a large geostrategic role, and therefore cannot be considered a private commercial project. Thus, she indicated her disagreement with the position of the new German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, who believes that the certification process for Nord Stream 2 should not have political overtones, and the new gas pipeline is a joint commercial project.
