Former Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili returned to his homeland with the aim of causing riots and a coup d’état, said Irakli Kobakhidze, head of the ruling Georgian Dream – Democratic Georgia party and ex-speaker of parliament.
Saakashvili, who arrived in Georgia a few days ago, was detained on October 1 by law enforcement agencies in the city of Rustavi.
According to Kobakhidze, “he arrived in Georgia to carry out a coup d’état and provoke unrest in the country. Accordingly, the law enforcement agencies took all measures to suppress his new crime.”
As the head of the ruling party noted, Saakashvili “has not left Georgia alone for 18 years,” first when he was in power, and then as an opposition figure.
Kobakhidze also stressed that “all procedures against Saakashvili will be conducted in accordance with all legal norms.” The Georgian authorities intend to inform Ukraine, where Saakashvili has been with interruptions in recent years, about all the circumstances related to the detention of the politician.
On the evening of October 1, Georgian President Salome Zurabishvili announced that she would never pardon Saakashvili.
Local self-government elections are held in Georgia on October 2. There is a version that Saakashvili came specially for these elections, which are of great importance for Georgia, in order to try to raise street protests.
