On September 7, within the framework of the 5th World Conference of Speakers of Parliaments, Speaker of the Parliament of Armenia Alen Simonyan met with the Speaker of the Georgian Parliament Kakhaber Kuchava.
During the meeting, Simonyan noted that Armenia attaches great importance to the sustainable development of friendly relations with Georgia, to the deepening of multifaceted cooperation, adding that the cooperation based on the Armenian-Georgian mutual trust is an important factor for security, peace and sustainable development in the region. Alen Simonyan informed his colleague that the close cooperation between the legislative bodies of the two countries is very important, and the Armenian-Georgian friendship group will be re-established in the Parliament soon, which will promote further effective cooperation.
Speaking about the settlement of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, Alen Simonyan thanked for all the efforts made by Georgia in this process. Georgian counterpart Kakhaber Kuchava once again congratulated Alen Simonyan on being elected Parliament Speaker, reminding that he is also the newly elected Speaker of the Parliament, considering it a good opportunity to give a new impetus to the bilateral cooperation. The Parliament Speaker of Georgia touched upon the activity of the friendship groups with satisfaction in the two parliaments during the previous convocation, expressed conviction of more effective cooperation.
An agreement was reached to intensify the work of the profile commissions. The chairman of the Georgian Foreign Affairs Committee present at the meeting expressed readiness to work out joint programs of cooperation with his Armenian counterpart. Both sides stressed the need to implement a number of initiatives aimed at regional security and stability.
Simonyan spoke about the construction of the ‘Friendship Bridge’ of strategic importance, expressing conviction that it would best contribute to the deepening of the cooperation of the neighboring states, the development of trade, infrastructures and tourism. He noted that this program financed by the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development, the governments of Armenia and Georgia can become one of the symbols of the centuries-old Armenian-Georgian friendship.
