U.S. anti-missile defences intercepted as many as five rockets that were fired at Kabul's airport early on Monday (August 30), a U.S. official said, as the United States rushed to complete its withdrawal from Afghanistan to end its longest war, Reuters reports.
Afghan media said Monday's rocket attack was launched from the back of a vehicle. The Pajhwok news agency said several rockets struck different parts of the Afghan capital.
In videos obtained by Reuters, locals were seen gathered around the vehicle, which had been completely burnt. A large plume of black smoke was also seen rising among buildings from a distance.
American forces had earlier on Sunday launched a drone strike targeting a suicide bomber in a vehicle who was also aiming to attack the airport. There is increasing concern that Islamic State militants will launch further attacks as U.S. troops hurry to evacuate more people, before completing their own withdrawal by August 31.
