Russia is interested in peace in Afghanistan, and it will strive for this, said Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov. At the same time, he recalled the partnership with the Central Asian neighbors within the framework of CSTO, vesti.ru reports.
“We very firmly hope that no one will think of testing the strength of the Collective Security Treaty Organization and trying to start aggressive actions against any of its members,” he stressed, speaking during the webinar ‘Russia's foreign policy: success, challenges, tasks and prospects’.
Lavrov also pointed out that the Afghan government in the situation that has developed after the departure of the American military should think not about staying in power, but about the country’s future. In particular, to start negotiations with the Taliban which, according to some sources, already controls 70-80 percent of the territory of Afghanistan.
Earlier, the media reported that the Taliban considered the resignation of the incumbent president of the country, Ashraf Ghani, and the formation of a new government as a condition for peace in Afghanistan. However, later, the official representative of the political bureau of the radical movement, Mohamed Naim, denied this.
