A group of US senators sent a letter to President Joe Biden asking him to put pressure on Turkey and impose sanctions against it, Infoteka24 reports.
The thing is that Turks want to reopen the fenced city of Varosha (Marash is the Turkish name) under the occupation of the self-proclaimed Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, which was closed after the Turkish occupation of Cyprus.
As we have previously reported, Foreign Relations Committee Chairman Bob Menendez, Marco Rubio and Chris Van Hollen sent a letter to Joe Biden in this respect.
“We urge you to work in tandem with the European Union to make clear, in advance, that any attempt by Turkey to support the resettlement or reopening of Varosha will be met by multilateral sanctions,” they said.
Senators said that Turkey is ignoring the calls of the European Parliament and the UN on this matter.
At the same time, 11 US senators issued a statement in which they criticized the plans of the Turkish side and called on Joe Biden to use all his levers of pressure on Turkey and prevent Ankara's illegal plans.
The Turkish source notes that this letter was sent before Erdogan's visit to Northern Cyprus.
