Russia has a working relationship with Turkey, but it is a NATO country. An in-depth dialogue between Turkey and Azerbaijan also raises questions - if military bases suddenly appear there, it will be close to the borders of the Russian Federation. Does this interfere with relations between Moscow and Ankara? Dmitry Peskov, press secretary of the President of the Russian Federation, gave his commentary on the air of the ‘Россия 1’ TV channel.
“Indeed, Turkey is a NATO country, but at the same time, our relations with Turkey are still an example of the fact that even with NATO members represented by Turkey it is possible and necessary to build partnerships,” Peskov said.
It is also an example of the fact that even NATO countries, despite “the indisputable discipline in this bloc, which is built on a very simple vertical, at the top of which is the United States of America,” can still maintain their sovereignty and take a responsible position in terms of ensuring regional security.
“Therefore, relations with Turkey in this context are very important, and these relations are rather stabilizing for our region. Otherwise - well, a Kalashnikov assault rifle cannot be anything but a Kalashnikov assault rifle. And NATO cannot be anything but NATO,” Peskov stated.
This is a bloc that was created for confrontation, for confrontation with the Soviet Union.
“It continues to perform these functions, because it is not sharpened for anything else. It does not bring any stability on the continent. On the contrary, it is a destabilizing element. At the same time, the Russian Federation has always remained interested in establishing constructive relations with NATO,” Peskov said.
