The general condition of Pope Francis, who underwent intestinal surgery on Sunday evening, is good, the Holy See reported on Monday.
“The general condition of His Holiness Pope Francis is good, he is conscious and breathes on his own,” said the head of the Holy See’s press service.
According to a Vatican spokesman, the operation lasted about three hours and required a resection of the left large intestine. The 84-year-old pontiff is expected to stay in the hospital for approximately seven days, unless complications arise.
On Saturday around midnight, the Holy See circulated a message stating that Pope Francis had undergone “elective surgery for diverticular disease of the sigmoid colon” at the Agostino Gemelli hospital in Rome.
Three hours before his hospitalization, Pope Francis, in his traditional Sunday address to the faithful from the window of the Vatican’s Apostolic Palace, announced his upcoming trip to Hungary and Slovakia in September. He was in good spirits and, as usual, wished everyone a good Sunday and asked them to pray for him.
