Brussels expresses its readiness to continue cooperation with the Belarusian people, despite the suspension of Minsk’s membership in the Eastern Partnership program, Josep Borrell, EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy,
tweeted, RTVI reports.
“Despite the decision by the Lukashenko regime to suspend Belarus participation in the Eastern Partnership, we are ready to continue working with the Belarusian people to strengthen the bonds, foster regional cooperation and tackle joint challenges,” Borrell wrote.
On June 28, the press service of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Belarus announced that the country is suspending its participation in the EU’s Eastern Partnership initiative and is starting to implement the procedure for suspending the EU’s readmission agreement.
The ministry linked these measures, as well as the challenge of the EU Ambassador Dirk Schuebel, with “unprecedented restrictive measures” against the Belarusian side. Earlier, the European Union imposed economic sanctions against Belarus for violation of its human rights by the authorities, repressions against the opposition, as well as the detention of journalists during a forced landing in Minsk of a Ryanair flight.
