The Armenian prisoners of war (POWs) held in Azerbaijan must be returned, the sooner the better, the Ambassador of the Netherlands to Armenia stated today, emphasizing that this is the position of the Kingdom Government.
A few days ago, the Dutch Parliament passed a resolution by an overwhelming majority, calling for pressure on Azerbaijan to release POWs and civilians. Considering the impact of the resolutions on the solution of this issue, Ambassador Nico Schermers expressed hope that the return of POWs will be without preconditions.
“This is not an instant issue, but I hope it will be resolved soon. Much work has already been done, including the foreign ministers of Romania, Austria and Lithuania last week were here, and they are also working as EU representatives to return POWs,” said Nico Schermers, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Kingdom of the Netherlands to the Republic of Armenia.
- How would you assess the so-called ‘Trophy Park’ opened in Baku after the war from the point of view of international humanitarian law?
- Such a thing should not have happened, it is unacceptable, and this is the position of the Government of my country, too. The opening of the park was shocking; it does not contribute to peace. We expect the creation of an atmosphere of trust; the parties should discuss ways to resolve issues at the diplomatic level in order to find ways of coexistence in this area.
