“Referring to the statement of Armenia’s Human Rights Defender, today the media published information about obstructing the work of an international journalist carrying out his professional activity in the Vardenis, Gegharkunik province, 2 kilometers away from the state border of Armenia, and threatening him with a weapon.
According to Armenia’s Ombudsman Arman Tatoyan and the mass media, which published his statement, the incident took place on June 15, 2021, when an international journalist was covering with other journalists in the relevant territory of the Republic of Armenia, 100 meters away from the Azerbaijani servicemen. The latter behaved aggressively, loaded their weapons, held them in the direction of the journalists, threatening to shoot.
The international journalist stopped working in order to avoid unpredictable consequences. According to the available information, the journalists of the international media had a visible logo for the Azerbaijani servicemen, followed the rules of journalistic work.
The publications were sent from Armenia’s Gegharkunik Regional Prosecutor's Office to the Gegharkunik Regional Investigation Department of Armenia’s Investigation Committee in order to prepare materials in a criminal procedure and to initiate a criminal case.
As a result, a criminal case was initiated in the Gegharkunik Regional Investigation Department of Armenia’s Penitentiary under the features of Part 3 of Article 164 of Armenia’s Criminal Code, and proceedings were accepted.
The preliminary investigation will find out all the circumstances of the crime.”
