The 200-year-old Armenian Church of St. Toros in Kayseri continues to be destroyed by thieves, Ermenihaber reports.
The walls of the church in the Tavlusun district of the Melikgaz region of Kayseri were deliberately polluted and damaged by paint, and treasure hunters dug a 2-meter-deep hole in one of the inner walls of the historic building.
Tavlusun district head Mehmet Yilmaz told a Turkish media reporter that locals had sprinkled dry grass inside the Armenian Church.
According to Yilmaz, in order to boost the development of local tourism, it is necessary to restore the church.
The mayor also said that the security guards of the municipality often control the church, but they do not manage to control the activities of the thieves, as the latter find ways to damage the building.
He expressed hope that if the church is restored, it will be possible to prevent the activities of thieves.
Officials of the Turkish Provincial Department of Culture and Tourism have stated that they cannot renovate the church, as it has the status of private property.
