US Ambassador to Moscow John Sullivan returned to the Russian capital on Thursday, counting on predictable and stable relations with Russia.
“I am delighted to be back in Moscow to continue working with an experienced and reliable team of the US diplomatic mission to advance US foreign policy interests in Russia. I look forward to working with our colleagues in the Russian Government to achieve our goal of establishing stable and predictable relations between the United States and Russia,” Sullivan told Interfax.
He stressed that, as US President Joe Biden said earlier in Geneva, Washington and Moscow have a responsibility to build relations between our two countries.
“We must cooperate where it meets our mutual interests, and where we have disagreements - and we have significant differences - it is important to have an open and frank dialogue,” Sullivan said.
“The meetings in Geneva were positive. Now that I am back in Moscow and Ambassador Antonov is back in Washington, I will work tirelessly to take the practical steps necessary to achieve the goals identified at the summit. Among other things, I look forward to working with colleagues in the Russian Government to develop a bilateral dialogue on strategic stability - a dialogue that serves the benefit of our countries and the whole world,” the American diplomat said.
He stressed: “As US Ambassador to Russia, I will continue to advocate for democracy, human rights, free and open media in the United States, Russia and the world. And I will continue to advocate for the fair treatment of US citizens in Russia, including Trevor Reed, whose trial will continue soon, and Paul Whelan, who has already spent more than 900 days in prison in Russia.”
