During a weekly briefing, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova touched upon the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, answering questions from Armenian Public TV journalist Mary Egoryan.
The first question concerns the incursion of Azerbaijani troops into the territory of the Republic of Armenia, the recent visit of the representatives of the Russian Armed Forces to Gegharkunik, Syunik provinces and the study of the areas where the Russian border guards may be deployed in case of possible retreat of the troops.
Maria Zakharova particularly stated:
“We have already mentioned that the reason for the incident on the Armenian-Azerbaijani border is the lack of international legal settlement, which comes from the lack of mutual trust between the parties. Russia continues to provide active mediation aimed at easing tensions. Close coordination is carried out with Yerevan and Baku in connection with the ministries of foreign affairs, ministry of defense, and border services. Tensions have eased over the past week. Consultations on the border dispute will continue accordingly. As a sustainable and long-term solution to the problem, we see the speedy start of the border demarcation process between the two countries, followed by demarcation. In this regard, we reaffirm our active support in this process,” said Maria Zakharova.
