Swiss President Guy Parmelin hopes that the meeting between Russian and US Presidents Vladimir Putin and Joe Biden will benefit not only these countries, but the entire international community. He stated this at a press conference following a meeting with the American leader, TASS reports.
“Switzerland has a long tradition of neutrality for our country. In addition, Geneva is no stranger to organizing major international events,” Parmelin said, answering a TASS question about the role Switzerland plays in the negotiation process and why Geneva was chosen as the meeting place for the Russian and American leaders.
To overcome the serious challenges of modern times, a constructive dialogue between countries is necessary, Guy Parmelin emphasized, commenting on the upcoming Russia-US summit.
“Switzerland is convinced that a constructive dialogue between the great powers is necessary to overcome the challenges of our time. The Geneva meeting provides an opportunity for the presidents of the United States and Russia to breathe a little optimism and hope into world politics,” the president stressed.
Switzerland is ready to support the exchange of prisoners between Russia and the United States, Parmelin added.
On Monday, Vladimir Putin said in an interview with NBC that he was ready to discuss the exchange of prisoners in talks with the American leader.
