According to the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI), in 2011-2020, Azerbaijan imported weapons worth of $3.274 billion and Armenia - $398 million. According to the institute, the majority of Armenian imports were made after 2018, in 2019. Only that year Yerevan imported weapons worth of $248 million, or 62.3% of what it had imported within ten years.
According to SIPRI experts, in 2011-2020, 60.1% of the arms supplied to Azerbaijan came from Russia, 26.6% from Israel, 7.1% from Belarus, 2.9% from Turkey and 3.3% from other countries.
In Armenia’s case, Russia is the main supplier: 93.7% of arms imports were made by Armenia from Russia, 5.3% from Jordan and 1% from the Ukraine.
According to SIPRI, in 2011-2020 Russia has supplied Armenia with rear-end combat vehicles, tanks, air defense equipment, volley fire jet systems. In 2016, Moscow gave Yerevan ‘Iskander’ missile systems with a distance of 300 km, at least one of which was used by Armenia during the 44-day war. In 2016-2017 Russia has supplied ‘Smerch’ rocket launchers, which were also used during the 44-day war. In 2019, four Su-30SM fighters were received from Russia.
During the same period, the Kremlin supplied Azerbaijan with infantry fighting vehicles, tanks, air defense equipment, transport and attack helicopters, volley fire rocket systems, artillery. According to the publication, all these weapons were used during the 44-day war against the Armenian forces.
