Head of the Islamic Republic of Iran Railways (known as RAI) Saeed Rasouli stated in an interview with ‘Liberty’ radio station:
“Reconstruction of the railway axis in Julfa and Armenia, which was damaged during the regional war (between Armenia and the Republic of Azerbaijan), will activate the Western Caspian Corridor between Iran and the Black Sea.”
Rasouli added that the ‘Julfa’ border railway with a capacity of 7 million tons of cargo per year, which ceased operations before the war, would be reopened as a result of Iran-Russia talks with Azerbaijan and Armenia.
According to Rasouli, the trains from Azerbaijan will enter the Astara terminal in the northern Iranian province of Gilan, and with the reconstruction of the western part of the corridor, the Iranian railway will join the Black Sea via the Julfa-Nakhichevan-Armenia-Georgia route.
