By the decision of the Gyumri Council of Elders, about 60 hectares of land in the center of Gyumri’s Mush district has been allocated to ‘Hayastan’ All-Armenian Fund to implement the ‘Our Gyumri’ housing program.
The project has started with the construction of two apartment buildings and a kindergarten next to them.
“The project is ongoing. The first two buildings are still under construction, the works have already started. Now the earthworks have started. The basic works have already started; the construction is in full swing. It is planned to complete the construction of the building in a year and a half,” says Henrik Gasparyan, Chief Architect of Gyumri.
This housing construction was made possible by ‘Hayastan’ All-Armenian Fund, thanks to donations from the Armenian community during the fundraising in Los Angeles in 2019. The construction was supposed to start in September last year, but the war broke the deadlines.
The four-storey apartment buildings will be powered by solar energy; solar panels will be installed on the roofs. The foundation is also concerned about the employment of the residents of the area, workshops will be set up in the attics so that the residents have the opportunity to get a profession. The foundation will choose the future residents.
People are optimistic in the municipality; they think the program will continue. There are still hundreds of homeless families in Gyumri. The number of homeless citizens is bigger.
“There are about 2700 cottages that we need to remove. We do that work,” Gasparyan says.
Social housing construction with ‘Arda’ company may also continue. Dozens of families have already celebrated housewarming with the co-financing of Gyumri Municipality and the company.
