May 1-2 has been declared a day of mourning in Kyrgyzstan following clashes on the border with Tajikistan, RIA Novosti reports. The message spread by the press service of the country’s president says:
“Kyrgyz President Sadyr Japarov has signed a decree declaring mourning on May 1-2, 2021,” the statement said.
The conflict between the two countries started on April 29 and turned into a military confrontation. The clash between the Kyrgyz and Tajik border guards lasted more than six hours. About 40 people were killed on both sides, more than 200 were injured. On the evening of April 29, the parties agreed to cease fire and withdraw troops from the border.
