Armenia’s Permanent Representative to UNESCO, Ambassador Christian Ter-Stepanyan gave an interview to Nouvelle d’Arménie. The main topic of the interview was the protection of Armenian monuments in the territories occupied by Azerbaijan. The ambassador noted that Armenia's goal is to involve UNESCO in the process, which should prevent the destruction and vandalism of the Armenian cultural heritage in the territories under the control of the Azerbaijani armed forces in Artsakh, as well as Azerbaijan’s attempts to appropriate the Armenian cultural heritage.
Although Baku has agreed to the involvement of UNESCO, it still creates obstacles to the implementation of the mission. According to Ambassador Ter-Stepanyan, the Azerbaijani authorities fear that UNESCO experts will witness atrocities against the Armenian cultural heritage when they enter Armenian cultural sites.
