The people captured in Azerbaijan after the 44-day Artsakh (Nagorno-Karabakh) war sent a video message to their families through the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC). This is the first time this means of communication with relatives has been launched. Armenians detained in Azerbaijan were also given the opportunity to contact their relatives by phone.
Zara Amatuni, head of communications programs at the International Committee of the Red Cross in Armenia, told Lurer that people whose captivity has been confirmed by Azerbaijan and who are regularly visited by the Red Cross Baku office have been given the opportunity to contact their relatives.
“To send messages via videos: this is a new format that the committee staff was able to use. We can hope that we will be able to use the measures while people are in prison. In this case, they will see their family, their relative, (will communicate) not only by writing, with a handwritten letter. We also plan that the relatives may send such messages to those who are being held in Azerbaijan if possible,” says Zara Amatuni, Head of Communication Programs of the ICRC Delegation in Armenia.
