In a letter to Foreign Minister of Canada Marc Garneau MP Elizabeth May, Parliamentary Leader of the Green Party of Canada urges the government to follow the recommendations of Human Right Watch and call for the immediate release of Armenian POWs.
In the letter the MP is expressing her concern for Armenian prisoners of war (POWs) held by Azerbaijan, during and following the 2020 Nagorno-Karabakh conflict.
The Canadian PM states that according to the report recently published by Human Rights Watch, Azerbaijan forces have subjected Armenian POWs to “cruel and degrading treatment and torture, either when they were captured, during their transfer, or while in custody at detention facilities.” Elizabeth May says that the abuse and torture is abhorrent and it is a war crime.
Elizabeth May is concerned that Armenian POWs that are still in Azerbaijani custody are at risk of further abuse. Canada must support the Human Rights Watch recommendations and stand in solidarity with Armenian POWs.
