The RA General Prosecutor’s Office summed up the results of the criminal fight against corruption crimes in the country in 2020 as compared to 2019.
In 2020, 1,810 materials on corruption crimes were prepared in the proceedings of the competent authorities of the Republic of Armenia, of which 1,232 criminal cases were initiated. That is to say, in 2020 as compared to 2019 the number of criminal cases initiated on corruption cases decreased by 11.9% or by 167.
In 2020, it was possible to complete 716 criminal cases, of which 183 criminal cases against 410 persons were sent to court with indictments. During the year, 1,356 people were prosecuted in 2,535 criminal cases of corruption investigated in the proceedings, which 7.3% more as compared to 2019.
The criminal prosecution of 204 persons was terminated, 61% of which were not justified.
Serious work has been done, especially in the field of recovering the damage caused to the state by crime. Particularly, about 223% or AMD 2․5 billion (more than $4 million 655 thousand) more damage was restored due to completed materials of corruption and completed criminal cases (in 2019 - AMD 2 billion (about $3 million 725 thousand), in 2020 - AMD 4.5 billion (about $8 million 380 thousand)).
In general, the number of criminal cases investigated during the year, the vast majority of which are corruption cases, the damage caused to the state or communities by crime (according to the cases under investigation may change) amounted to about AMD 227 billion (about $422 million 720 thousand) as compares to about AMD 105.7 billion (about $196 million 835 thousand) in 2019. In 2020 during the preliminary investigation of criminal cases, the damage of about AMD 14.2 billion (more than $26 million 443 thousand) was restored or about 12.6% more as compare to 2019.
A total of 671 of the persons prosecuted in corruption cases investigated during the year 2020 are officials and public servants, moreover, their number as compared to those in 2019 (530) is higher by 26.6%.
