The annual criminal statistics of the Council of Europe for 2020 are published. Armenia strengthens a number of indicators registered by the previous statistics and ensures their stability. Minister of Justice Rustam Badasyan posted about this on his Facebook page.
“According to the report, the level of imprisonment has decreased again in Armenia compared to other Council of Europe member countries (in 2018, 3,536 were kept in Armenian penitentiaries, in 2019, 2,266, and on January 31, 2020, 2,221 people).
The report also made a comparison between 2010 and 2020, stating that compared to 2010, Armenia registered a 50.4% decrease in the prison population, which is the second best result in the comparison table.
According to the same report, Armenia is currently one of the countries with the lowest rates of incarceration per 100,000 population, comparable to Germany, Denmark, Slovenia and Sweden.
In 2020, the number of women prisoners in Armenia was 3.1% of the total proportion, which is again lower than the European average.
Another positive indicator about Armenia is that with a prison population density of 100 places, Armenia ranks among the countries with the lowest rate - 41.5%. This is almost twice lower than the European average (86.6%).
The statistics are presented as of January 31, 2020, so the records made by us at the end of 2020 allow us to predict that next year, according to statistics, Armenia will again make progress in some indicators,” Badasyan wrote.
