Azerbaijani opposition journalist Afgan Mukhtarli is in Georgian capital Tbilisi again. The journalist posted about it on his Facebook page. Mukhtarli arrived in Georgia for the first time since his abduction, aliq reports.
The Azerbaijani journalist with opposition views has been living in Tbilisi since 2014. On May 29, 2017, he disappeared from one of the central streets of Tbilisi. The day after his abduction, the lawyer said that Mukhtarli had been forcibly transferred to Azerbaijan, where he had been charged with illegal crossing of the state border, smuggling and resisting the police.
On January 12, 2018, an Azerbaijani court sentenced him to six years in prison. In March 2020, the journalist was released and transferred to Germany.
The case of the journalist’s disappearance got a great response among the Georgian society. The journalist’s family claims that high-ranking Georgian officials are involved in the abduction.
