Reuters - Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi said on Tuesday (March 30) that the grounding of a huge container ship in the Suez Canal had reaffirmed the importance of the waterway.
"We didn't hope for something like this, but fate was doing its work. It showed and reaffirmed the reality and importance (of the canal)," Sisi said as he greeted staff on a visit to the Suez Canal Authority (SCA) in Ismailia.
Shipping in the waterway resumed on Monday evening (March 29) after nearly a week of backlog.
The 400-metre (430-yard) long Ever Given became jammed diagonally across a southern section of the canal in high winds early last Tuesday (March 23), halting shipping traffic on the shortest shipping route between Europe and Asia.
