Armenian Minister of Foreign Affairs Ara Aivazian presented the report on the results of the Government’s 2020 action plan at the special session of the Perliament's Standing Committee on Foreign Relations.
The Minister noted that last year the main priority of Armenia’s foreign policy continued to be the security of Armenia and Artsakh (Nagorno-Karabakh), and until September 27, 2020 within the framework of the OSCE Minsk Group Co-Chairs Armenia made efforts for the peaceful settlement of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict.
Aivazian first referred to the meeting between the Armenian and Azerbaijani Foreign Ministers co-chaired by the OSCE Minsk Group in Geneva in January 2020. Then to the April 21 meeting, as a result of which the Co-Chairs called on the sides to adhere to the UN Secretary General’s call for a global ceasefire. The President of Azerbaijan was dissatisfied and he decided to fire the Foreign Minister (Elmar Mamedyarov-ed.) who signed the document, thus announcing his commitment to the failure of the peace process.
“Azerbaijan first used force in the border area of Tavush province in mid-July last year, then on September 27, with the help of Turkish-sponsored foreign armed terrorists, unleashed a large-scale aggression against the Republic of Artsakh, which thwarted the OSCE Minsk Group peace process, disrupted regional peace, security and stability", the Foreign Minister said.
“The Foreign Ministry has done a lot to strengthen the perception of Azerbaijan's image as an instigator of aggression by the international community, to ensure the its position on the involvement of Turkish-sponsored armed terrorists in hostilities, to increase diplomatic pressure on the Turkish-Azerbaijani alliance, and to cease the military actions”, Aivazian stated.
“Currently, our region is in a period of new challenges which makes an imperative to further strengthen the cooperation with the partners who are interested in regional stability, security and peace. At the same time, all those developments showed that we need a strong chairmanship of the OSCE Minsk Group which will be able to lead the peace process based on the principles and elements developed within those years”, the Minister said.
