A group of prominent Italian celebrities called on the Azerbaijani authorities to release Armenian soldiers and civilians held captive during the Nagorno-Karabakh war, the Italian newspaper Avvenire reports.
Prominent Italian figures, including Antonia Arslan, Dacia Maraini, Laura Efrikian, Carlo Verdone and Giovanni Donfrancesco, stressed that “the immediate release of all POWs will help strengthen mutual trust between the two countries and the establishment of stability in the region. It will also give hope permanent peace.”
Italian writer Arslan noted that according to a report by Human Rights Watch, at least 60 military and civilian people are detained in Azerbaijan, condemning the mistreated elderly people who had been ill-treated or killed because they did not want to leave their villages in Artsakh.
The Italian politicians demanded from the Azerbaijani authorities to return all prisoners of war, including civilians to their families immediately, without preconditions, in accordance with the Geneva Convention and the trilateral announcement.
Avvenire stated that posting of videos showing the inhuman treatment of Armenian POWs on social media is quite concerning. It is emphasized that the inhumane treatment of POWs is a gross violation of the international law principles.
