The Parliament of Armenia with 113 ‘in favor’ and two ‘abstained’ adopted the draft on amendments to the Law on ‘On Military Service and Military Serviceman Status’, which envisages raising the age limit for contract military service.
According to the current legislation, there is no possibility to enlist in the contract military service, in one case after the age of 45, and in the other case after the age of 40. Bright Armenia offers to raise that limit until the age of 63.
During the discussion of the draft, head of the Bright Armenia faction Edmon Marukyan noted that the need for changes in the law appeared when war participants, citizens of Armenia, who are over 45, but they have experience of war, combat, are healthy, could not engage in contract military service, as the law forbids them to.
The National Assembly also adopted the draft amendments to the Law on ‘Military Service Status of Servicemen’ submitted by Bright Armenia and passed in the first reading with 112 votes ‘in favor’, zero ‘against’ and two ‘abstained’.
The draft proposes to give the citizens subject to compulsory military service studying in the secondary professional program the opportunity to continue or complete their education after reaching the age of 19.
